Here is the routine I followed during my 40 Day Green Smoothie Fast.
Upon arising, I would make a green juice. Usually, it consisted of Celery, Cucumber, Spinach, Kale, Garlic, a small apple and a small carrot. Then depending on my mood or what was in the fridge, I’d add other ingredients like: ginger, broccoli, collard greens, etc. I usually consumed about 16 ounces.
Then I would make my green smoothies for the day. I’d make 32 ounces and there was much variety to what I made. I would make a smoothie depending on what my body was asking for. If I felt like salty, I’d make it one way. If I felt like sweet, I’d go heavier on the fruit. If I wanted a thai flavor, I’d make it accordingly by using certain vegetables, herbs and spices. How a smoothie is made is limited only by your creativity. The varieties and flavor combinations are endless! In this sense, a google search can be your best friend. Think of what flavor you are craving and google it. You’ll be amazed at what you will find. Google helped spark many a creative moment for me.
The important thing is to listen to your body and honor what it is telling you. My body would crave certain flavors, textures and sensations. And I would provide them. It was an extremely satisfying experience.
I would put the smoothies in 2 – 16 ounce containers and consume one at lunch and the other at dinner. At night, I would make a “dessert” smoothie. Just a little treat of something I was in the mood for. I’d make about 24 ounces so that I could consume 8 ounces or so as a treat and I’d refrigerate the remaining 16 ounces for use the next day. I usually had this in the afternoon as a pick me up.
I would also consume a hot homemade soup, usually daily. I would blend them down so they met the liquid requirement. I made sure to put a sweet potato in them as this, along with the fact that it was “cooked”, made for a slower detox and cleansing experience. As I had explained in a previous post, this cleanse was more about a spiritual exercise than a full-on detox with heavy cleansing. So, I wanted to manage the cleansing effects with the main goal to complete the 40 days. I probably consumed 16 ounces of soup most days.
So, to recap:
First thing in AM
16 ounces of Green Juice (made fresh)
From 10:30am – 1pm depending on how early I had the Juice
16 ounce green smoothie (made fresh)
When hungry in Afternoon, usually 4-6pm
16 ounces hot homemade soup
(I’d make a LARGE pot so it usually would last 2-3 days)
and/or 16 ounce fruit smoothie (made the night before)
At Dinner 5-7pm
16 ounce green smoothie (made in the AM)
Evening Snack 9pm or so
8 ounce dinner dessert smoothie (made fresh)
Please remember, this was my regiment. If you do a green smoothie fast, please use this as a guide only. You need to follow what your body needs and asks for. Also, remember to drink lots of water during the day. Water will help move the toxins out of your body through your filter organs.
The first 3-5 days are the hardest. The body sends confusing signals about “being hungry” and wanting to chew. If made correctly, your smoothy should be nutritionally complete and your body should not lack nutrition at all. When these signals happened to me, I’d drink water and it would usually pass. Also, I’d post my feelings on Facebook and my community would come forth and support me. It is beneficial to do this with a support system set up.
In the next post, I will post several of the main recipes I used as well as some fun ones I concocted along the way.
When on a cleanse, the goal of the cleanse can be met in a fun and creative way. So, I mixed it up and made each day different and pleasurable.
